Early Life
Shonda Rhimes was born on January 13, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, United States to parents; Vera Rhimes, a college professor, and Ilee Rhimes, a university administrator. She is the youngest child in a family of six children.
She resided in Park Forest South with her five siblings, two older brothers, and three older sisters.
She went to Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois for her high school education. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in English and Film studies from Dartmouth College. She studied screenwriting at the University of Southern California. She also obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Career
Rhimes joined the Black Underground Theater Association where she divided her time between directing and performing in student productions and writing fiction.
She wrote for the college newspaper and moved to San Francisco to work in advertising at McCann Erickson.
She was employed as an intern while at USC and also worked at Denzel Washington’s company, Mundy Lane Entertainment.
Rhimes worked as a research director on the documentary Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream in 1995 and followed up with a short film, Blossom and Veils, in 1998, starring the likes of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Jeffrey Wright.
She wrote Crossroads, the debut film of pop singer Britney Spears in 2001, and also worked on Writing Disney’s sequel to its popular movie The Princess Diaries.

She has a production company named Shondaland. Some of the shows on Shondaland are Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Off the Map, Scandal, The Catch, Station 19, For the People, Inventing Anna, and How to Get Away with Murder.
She entered a multi-year development deal with Netflix in 2017, of which all her future productions will be Netflix Original series. She began to work on over 12 projects for Netflix as of October 2020, of which include the period drama Bridgerton.
Personal Life
Rhimes adopted her first daughter in June 2002. She adopted another girl in February 2012. She also welcomed her third daughter via gestational surrogacy in September 2013.
Rhimes revealed that she had lost 117 pounds through dieting and exercising, in September 2015.
