Early Life
Rena Wakama was born on April 11, 1992, in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States, to parents, Johnson Wakama and Rosana Oba. She is originally from Okrika im Rivers State. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the Western Carolina University, a masters degree in Business Administration from Manhattan College.
Career
Rena Wakama developed passion for playing basketball at a tender age while being inspired by her cousin named Onimisi Aiyede.
As a player, she played for the Western Carolina Catamounts for four years. She joined D’Tigress after she left college where she played for the team at the 2015 Women’s afrobasket tournament in Cameroon, where Nigeria finished third. She also represented Nigeria’s First Bank at the FIBA Africa Champions up for Women.
As a coach, she served as the director of women’s basketball operations for her first two years at Manhattan College, and became the assistant coach in her third year.
Wakama became the first female Head coach of D’Tigress in 2023, and also became the first Nigerian National Female Basketball team coach to win the FIBA Afrobasket women competition since 1966.
She made a name at the 2024 Olympics in Paris where led the Nigeria D’Tigress to the quarterfinals of basketball at the Olympics after recording victory against Canada. She was also awarded the Best coach of the tournament by FIBA.
