Born Koos Jacobus Petrus Bekker on December 14, 1952 in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
He attended Wits University where he majored in Law and also holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, New York. He received an honorary doctorate from Stellenbosch University.
Career
Bekker founded one of the first two pay television services outside of the U.S. M-Net and its sister companies which include Multichoice, later expanded to 48 countries across Africa.
He was a founding director of the mobile communication company MTN in the 1990s.
He became CEO of Naspers, one of the initial investors in the Multi-choice group, in 1997. Naspers bought out the other shareholders and the market capitalization of Naspers grew from about $1.2 billion to $45 billion during his tenure. During his 15 years as CEO, he did not earned any salary or bonus and was compensated mainly via stock option grants that vested over time.
Naspers invested in pay televison, mobile telephony, and other Internet services under Bekker.
