Kashim Shettima is a Nigerian banker turned politician who came to prominence as the Governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019. He became the vice presidential nominee in the 2023 presidential election for the All Progressive Congress (APC) party alongside Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shettima’s tenure as the Governor of Borno state was succeeded by Babagana Umara Zulum. He served as Senator for Borno Central since 2019.

Early Life
Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, Borno State, Northern part of Nigeria. He is the son of Kashim Ibrahim, Governor of Northern Nigeria.
He went to Lamisula primary school in Maiduguri for his primary education and attended Government Community Secondary School, Biu, for hi secondary education. He completed his secondary education at Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum, in 1983.
He obtained a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri, in 1989 and obtained a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Ibadan in 1991.
Career
Shettima started as a lecturer in the department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri and was in academia from 1991 to 1993.
He moved to the banking sector in 1993 and worked as head of accounts at the now-defunct Commercial Bank of Africa Limited, at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State.
He left Zenith Bank in 1997 and moved to African International Bank Limited as a deputy manager where he rose to become a manager in 2001. He worked in Zenith Bank in 2001 as the head of its main branch in Maiduguri. At Zenith Bank, he rose from Senior Manager, Assistant General Manager, and Deputy General Manager to General manager in 2007.

He left Zenith bank after he was appointed Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. He later became Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture and later Health. He served as Commissioner in 5 ministries from 2007 to 2011.
Kashim Shettima became the Governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019. From 2019, he served as Senator for Borno Central and replaced Senator Babakaka Bashir.
