Early Life
Duro Olowu was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He is from a mixed ethnicity as his father is Nigerian and his mother Jamaican. He was raised in Lagos, while having his summers in Europe, and also relocated to the United Kingdom at the age of 16. He obtained a law degree at the University of Kent for his tertiary education.
Career
Duro Olowu developed passion for fashion at a very tender age. He came through with the launch of his women’s wear label in 2004, which started up with a summer 2005 collection. He came to the limelight for his empire-waist multi print silk dress from that collection. The dress was identified as “Dress of the Year” by British Vogue and American Vogue, thus tagged “Duro Dress”.
His booming career was supported by American first lady Michelle Obama who wore his designs frequently. She also commissioned him to decorate the Vermeil Room in the White Gouse in 2015.
Olowu delved into curating contemporary art exhibitions in galleries and museums which began with “Material” (2012), and “More Material” (2014), at Salon94 gallery in New York. His first museum exhibition “Making & Unmaking” was in 2016 at the Camden Arts centre in London. His second museum exhibition “Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago”, was curated in early 2020 at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago”.
