Dayot Upamecano was born Dayotchanculle Oswald Upamecano on October 27, 1998, in Evreux, France. He is of Bissau-Guinean descent and grew up in La Madelaine, a neighbourhood with many African immigrants. He has five siblings, four sisters and a younger brother.
Career
Dayot Upamecano began his football career at the youth level Evreux alongside Rafik Guitane and Ousmane Dembele.
He moved to the youth academy of Valenciennes in 2013 before joining Liefering in 2015 and Red Bull Sarlzburg in 2016.
He signed for the Italian club RB Leipzig on a four-and-a-half-year deal for a reported fee of €10 million on January 13, 2017. He made his debut for the club in a 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund on February 4, 2017. He scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 victory against Augsburg.
He agreed to a five-year deal with the German club Bayern Munich on February 14, 2021. He made his debut in pre-season friendly against 1.FC Koln. He scored his first goal for the club in a 4-0 victory against Vfl Wolfsburg on December 17, 2021.
Upamecano represented France at the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels. He made his debut for the senior team on September 5, 2020, in a match against Sweden. He scored his first goal for the national team in a 4-2 victory over Croatia.
