Early Life
Mila J was born Jamilo Akiko Aba Chilomba on November 18, 1982 in Los Angeles, California, United States to parents Christina Yamamoto, an art teacher and Dr. Karamo Chilomba, a musician and pediatrician. Her parents parted ways. She is of mixed ethnicity; of Japanese-American, Spanish-American & Dominican-American on Christina’s side and African-American, German-American & Jewish-American on Karamo’s side. She has a younger sister named Jhene Aiko is also a singer. Some of her other siblings include Miyoko Chilombo (elder sister), Jahi Chilomba (younger brother), Tyler Antonius (younger brother).
Career
Mila J began her career with an up-and-coming dance group. She and her sister Miyoko, and Paulette Maxwell eventually formed the R&B group Gyrl. They were backup dancers who appeared in music videos like “Constantly”, “Da Machines”, and “I Don’t Mind”.
The Gyrl group released their debut single “Play Another Slow Jam” in 1995, after which Paulette left the group. The group welcomed the likes of Glorika “Jeanee” Briley and Tai-Amber Hoo, in 1997, and they released the single “Get your Groove On”. The group later disbanded after sometime.
Mila J became a member of another, Dame Four, in 200, alongside Tomasina Parrot, Tennile Mathis and Mercedes, Nelson. The group also the single “How We Roll” before they parted ways.
She was away for sometime from the music industry. She has been able to develop her passion for music with influences from the likes of Brandy, Janet Jackson, and Mya.
She signed with Universal Motown and was featured on songs by the likes of Omarion and RaRa. She came throught with her debut album Split Personality. The album featured the likes of Young Rome, Regus Blaq, and Marques Houston.
She released two EPs, Made in L.A in 2014, and 213, in 2017. She released another album titled “Dopamine”, a 13-track album, in 2017.
